The Child of Mercy Children’s Centre was formed in 2010 by Jessica Opisa with 8 children living in a rented bungalow. We then joined her as Trustees to assist in the Development of the organisation and with a clear goal of creating one of the best run Orphanages in the area. We strived to create a home for the children were they could be safe, well cared for, educated and grow up in a happy and disciplined environment.
From those early beginnings we gradually moved forward and now have 44 children and our own premises (Kernow House) in a half acre plot which we purchased in 2012. We are located in Likoni near to Shelly Beach not far from the The Likoni ferry which connects to Mombasa.
The children are cared for by 8 hard working and valued members of staff, most of these live on the premises. All the children attend school, have 3 meals a day and love to play in the large grounds. Most weekends they go to the beach which is just a few minutes walk away.
Most of the Children start at Timbwani Primary School and then move to a Secondary Boarding School after Year 8. This way the teenagers benefit a better standard of education in a safe environment and creates more space for younger children to come to the orphanage.
All our children are referred to us by The Children’s officer with commital orders if they stay. They usually come from troubled backgrounds were they have suffered abuse or neglect, many have come to us from living on the streets.
We are always striving to make the orphanage self-sufficient with income from a chicken project, cows and a very successful volunteering scheme.
We need assistance to pay for staff wages, medicines, food, electricity and water. We have many plans for the future development of the plot and orphanage and are looking to run further Outreach Projects from here.
“The ultimate expression of generosity is not in giving of what you have, but in giving of who you are.”
These children are urgently in need of a sponsor. £14 a month. Do you know someone who could help?
These Children need your help, give as much as you can afford? Everything is appreciated.
